Listen to our interview with Geldhart of Regina, Saskatchewan. This Cacher got his start using Trimble's Geocache Navigator on his Blackberry. Since then he has switched to the eTrex Legend HCx for the GPS, Cacheberry on the Blackberry, and GSAK to load both. His favorite hides are From Edmonton with Love (GC1VX7A) and lrae (GC1VX7R) which require cachers in two cities to work together to claim each of the caches. His musical taste includes the Arrogant Worms, Slim Dusty, and Weird Al. On television he enjoys watching the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Mythbusters.

Listen to our interview with jeffbouldin of Tennessee. He's currently dreaming of upgrading to a DeLorme PN-40, but currently caches with a Magellan eXplorist 500. He started with the Magellan eXplorist 210 before being upgraded to the Magellan Triton 300, then going to the Magellan eXplorist 300. He uses GSAK to load them, but has worked paperless through CacheMate (first on Palm, then on Windows Mobile), followed by GCz, and now BlackStar on the Blackberry. His favorite location has been the Virgin Falls State Natural Area, but he looks forward to caching in Alaska, Australia, Oregon, and Washington. As for entertainment, he likes the "Star Wars," "Star Trek," "Monty Python," and "the Princess Bride" movies. On television he enjoys "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate Universe," "Monk," "Star Trek," and "Criminal Minds."

Cache-A-Maniacs in Brief

Welcome to website for the Cache-A-Maniacs Podcast. Each episode of the Cache-A-Maniacs features a candid, uncut, and irregular interview with a member of the Geocaching community. What do we mean by "candid, uncut, and irregular interviews?"

Candid: While guests are provided with a list of typical questions, the shows are unscripted, recorded live.
Uncut: While we might edit the shows to make them easier to listen or watch, the content of the interview will remain untouched.
Irregular: We'll release usually one show each week but at least one show each month. Shows will very in length with many under 20 minutes, and some (though very rare) more than an hour.

When possible we'll video tape the interviews which will be release as video podcasts. Most will be recorded over the telephone or an IP for an audio only podcast. Stop by this website for show notes, including links the guests' profile, as each show is posted.

Since this is a podcast you'll be able to consume the episodes at your convenience. Download the episodes anytime you like and watch or listen at your convenience from you computer, set-top box, or portable media player. Listen to our interview with WitzEnd of Tacoma Washington. He and The Bad Cop (interviewed on CAM136 started caching together about five years ago. As for WitzEnd's favorite locations he's cached to date, that would be Hawaii and Japan. Eventually he would like to cache in Antarctica. His favorite hide was the Digital Communication (GCMC4D) which used a container he received as a gift. On television he enjoys Chuck, Dirty Jobs, and MythBusters. As for movies, Galaxy Quest, Star Trek, and Star Wars are notable favorites.

Listen to our interview with StinkyMillers of Lincoln Nebraska. On his brother's recommendation, he purchased the GPSMAP 60Cx to start caching and still uses that today. The favorite location he's been caching so far was Australia. He would like to cache the remaining five continents he has not yet found a cache (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, and South America) to have cached on all seven. He enjoys "Lost" on television, older movies by Steven Spielberg like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Jaws." As for his music tastes, he enjoys AC/DC and U2.

CAM Ep. 147: Influence Waterfoul Calls

Listen to our interview with Influence Waterfowl Calls of Mayfield, Kentucky. He started his caching adventures with a eTrex Camo, but has since upgraded to the GPSMAP 60CSx. He also uses the nÃvi 200 and loads them through GSAK. He uses CacheMate and a Tungsten E2 for paperless. His favorite location to cache to date has been the St. Louis, Missouri where he found the "RT66:IL-MO - Above the Trees & Mississippi Cache" (GC2258). He'd like to cache just about anywhere there are caches to be found, but the Seattle, Washington area, Antarctica, and Brazil are stand-outs. He favorite hide was the now archived "Behind The Castle Gate!" (GC14Y4J) unknown cache. Some movies he enjoyed were "Shooter," "Fast & Furious," "Find Me," and "GPS the Movie." He's also been watching "America's Got Talent" on television lately.

CAM Ep. 146: Hamilton Family

Listen to our interview with Hamilton Family of Durham, New Hampshire. Dave and family began caching in 2003 with the eTrex Legend, which they had problems finding caches while in the woods. Earlier this year they attempting finding a cache with the iPhone and found they were actually able to locate those caches in the woods. Shortly after they bought the Geocaching iPhone App and love the convenience of caching without all the prep. They still use that old eTrex for the kids though, loaded through MacCaching. Their favorite cache so far was found in Naples, Florida. At a loss for ideas of dream locations, Darryl and Drie suggested New Zealand and Australia, and the upcoming Oz Mega Wagga Wagga Mega-Event. Dave and his friend John host the "Mac Geek Gab Podcast." The family enjoys attending concerts and this year the kids enjoyed their first Phish concert. A movie they recently enjoyed was "Instinct." He and his podcasting partner used to enjoy "Mystery Science Theater 3000." on TV during their earlier years.

"I am from north of Toronto Canada, and have a tip for 'northern' n00bs. I started in early April, and was able to find a number of caches that would have been much harder in summer time, caches in trees and bushes are a lot easier before all of the trees are in bloom, and the wild grass grows up around them. I was able to find them at a much faster rate because of the easier terrain rating of spring time. In Canada (and probably the northern states too) you can probably reduce the terrain rating by .5 or 1 in spring and fall. Finding a number of caches that seasoned geocachers had DNF'd fueled my now unsatisfiable obsession. I attribute some of the finds to the lowered terrain rating. (Another bonus is mosquitoes etc are not a nuisance in the spring, making it more enjoyable). So my tip to folks thinking of starting geocaching, starting in the spring or fall in the northern half of the continent makes the introduction more rewarding."

Listen to our interview with Ashallond of Ft. Smith, Arkansa. Though he knew of Geocaching first, he didn't begin caching till he bought an iPhone 3G and downloaded the iPhone Geocaching App. To round out the phone as a geocaching device he also added MotionX-GPS and iGCT Geocachers ToolKit. His favorite find so far was "Making the Connection" (GCHNF5). He dreams of caching in the Northwestern United States, Western Canada, Ireland, and Scotland. He was surprised to find that his "9-9-9: The Cache!" (GC1YBXW) cache which was posted to commemorate 9-9-9 was found 9 times on the 9th. In his little free time he enjoys playing "The Kingdom of Loathing." As for movies, "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings" are favorite series. A favorite TV show was "Battlestar Galactica."

Listen to our interview with Pumpkinking27 of North East Pennsylvania. He starting caching with a TomTom One but added the Garmin Venture HC quickly after that first attempt. He uses the Geocaching iPhone App on his iPod Touch for paperless, but loads EasyGPS to load the eTrex. He dreams of caching in Italy and wants to return to Disney World in Florida for all the Virtual Caches. He likes movies by Tim Burton. "The Office" and "Seinfeld" are his favorite television shows while Alkaline Trio and Weezer are a couple of his favorite musical acts.

That gift was the Garmin Nüvi 200 but he has added a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx. He loads the GPSRs through GSAK and uses the Geocaching iPhone App for his paperless caching. "Often when we are out in the woods searching for a cache, we seem to get pitch or sap on our hands after we've touched a tree trunk or branch. Inevitably the sap gets on everything including our GPSR, clothes, or PDA and its really annoying. Trying to wash it off your hands with water just doesn't work. In our caching bag, we carry a small bottle of alcohol based hand sanitizer (like Purell) and we've found it dissolves pitch instantly. Give it a try - you'll also find it very useful for a post bathroom cleanup should the need arise!"

He turned the camera and microphones on us for an interview of the Cache-A-Maniacs hosts for his Geosnippets show and you can watch part 1 and part 2 on his YouTube channel. "For various reasons a cache may need to be moved. I have had to do this when the grounds crew cut back the growth that hid you from the muggles on a near by trail. When faced with moving your cache leave a forwarding address when possible. Just write the coordinates to the new location on a slip of paper and put it into a zip lock bag. Place the bag where the cache was originally hidden, such as under the usual pile of sticks. Then if a cacher with the old coordinates comes to find the cache they will not be hit with a DNF. They can follow the forwarding address to the new location. They will thank you just like they did me! Remember to retrieve the bag after you think that there will be no more cachers with the old coords seeking the cache. That way it will not just become geotrash!"

"Don't note cache problems in 'Found It' or 'Didn't Find It' logs. When a cache has a problem contact the owner directly, or use the 'Needs Maintenance' or 'Needs Archived' options to log the issue instead of noting the issue in a 'Found It' or 'Didn't Find It' log. Some cache hiders don't read found or DNF logs, and some cache owners are no longer active. It's not unusual to visit a cache with long string of Found It logs containing the message 'soggy log,' for example. If the cache needs work then post an additional Needs Maintenance log for this. If a cache has a serious problem then check to see if the owner is no longer active. If the owner's profile says that it has been years since they've visited Geocaching they're not active and the cache warrants a 'Needs Archived' log instead of 'Needs Maintenance.' In some cases active cachers don't maintain their hides so a string of ignored problems may warrant a 'Needs Archived' log after close examination. Finally, if a cache has serious ignored problems (especially safety issues) you should contact Geocaching directly."

He's currently using an Garmin Oregon 200 but started with a Garmin eTrex Legend. He want control over his GPX files so he runs all his Pocket Queries through GSAK before loading the GPSRs. His favorite location was found during his recent milestone at the "Mission 9: Tunnel of Light" (GC1169) Project APE cache. He would like to revisit France to go caching. "With summer, comes the need to keep hydrated. Now, Everyone will tell you drink plenty of water. But, water alone, and too much, can be just as bad. Most sports drinks provide electrolytes, but are mostly sugar, or other carbohydrate content. Energy drinks are sports drinks, with some form of stimulant, usually caffeine, which may provide quick energy, but for only short period. Caffeine is also a diuretic, which will cause the body to expel water, and too much, can cause dehydration. A good tip, would be a 50/50 mixture of a sports drink, with plain water. This way, the body gets the electrolytes, while the water is still absorbed, and not as bound to the carbohydrates (Sugars)."

This caching couple first purchased a Garmin GPSMap 60CS on the recommendation from a caching friend, but since upgraded to a Garmin GPSMap 60CSx. They use GSAK to load their GPSR and a Palm Tungsten E2 with Cachemate for paperless caching in the field. Their most memorable early caching experience was on the "Round Mountain" (GC3D14) cache when they underestimated the time needed to complete the find. They love caching in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area for the creative and varied hides. They would love to caching in the state of California someday. His favorite GPSR is the Lowrence iFinder but still uses the Magellan SporTrak Pro. He's recently acquired the Garmin Nüvi 260W to help drive to the caches. GSAK is his favorite tool to load the GPSRs but now using the Geocaching App on the iPhone (replacing his old Palm PDA) for cache information on the trail. Favorite locations he's been caching include Del Mar, California and Yellowstone National Park but would like to cache all 50 U.S. states. As for his favorite hide, the "Centennial Trail Multi" (GC1999K) 4-stage multi-cache hidden on the Will Rogers Country Centennial Trail provides interesting logs from its Finders. As for movies, he enjoys the "X-Men" and "Lord of the Rings" series. Favorite television shows include "Chuck," "NCIS," and "Monty Python's Flying Circus."

Though he had a GPSR early on, his first Geocaching GPSR was the Magellan Explorist 300. Since then he's upgraded to the Garmin Colorado 400t. He was using a Palm Treo 650 with the Tom Tom software but switched to the Garmin Nüvi 750 and the TextMarks service. Dave and a friend hunted and found the first geocache he had attempted but DNFed -- ~~"Indiana Spirit Quest #75: Old Baintertown" (GCM6AN) -- as his find number 750~~ "ALPHA" (GC4F4B) -- as his find number 275. Before be started caching he took a trip on Route 66 and would like the opportunity to make the trip again hitting caches along the way. His motivation for Geocaching came from a walk on the Southern Upland Way in Southern Scotland. For that hike he picked up the Forerunner 201. Since then he's upgraded to the for his caching. He prefers to load the caches as POIs (Point Of Interest) rather than waypoints using a macro for GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife). He once flew to the Lake District in North West England just to be the first to find an elaborate multi-cache. Another notable multi-cache adventure took place in the Black Forest of Germany where he was not able to find the final cache. The closest that he came to a signature item was to produce the Isle of Man Geocoin. His favorite caching location was the Black Forest, but given the chance he would like to return to California. The favorite caches hides are "The Money Pit"e (GCX21B) and the "Three Legs" series. The most memorable caching event was "The UK's First Mega Event" (GC17W59) where he ran into many of the Cachers he recognized from logs. Listen to our interview with kf4oox of Northwest Pennsylvania. His name is him Amateur radio call sign as assigned by the FCC. He started caching with his Garmin GPS III Plus but quickly upgraded to the GPS V. He has upgraded to the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 and is currently using the beta software which allows for Geocaching on the unit. His favorite location for caching had been around last year's "Midwest GeoBash 2008" (GC154HT) largely for the proximity to other Cachers. He would like to cache in Alaska and Hawaii, and not just for the caches. Each of the four caches he current owns -- "Short Walk in State Game Lands #204" (GC1MQF1), "Canoe Launch in Sharon?" (GC1EQ5N), "Sharon View II" (GC18BFE), and "Sharon West Hill" (GC182F5), -- are favorites. His most memorable Geomuggle story was an encounter with a crowbar weilding muggle at "Shady Tree Cove" (GC174PB). Aside from the Geocaching and Amateur radio, Paul enjoys model railroading, railfanning, and is volunteer firefighter. As for television viewing he leans toward the Discovery Channel, Science Channel, and National Geographic Channel. Some favorite shows include Dog Whisperer and COPS. He's been into Country Music as of late with favorites including Kenny Roger, Charlie Daniels, and SHeDAISY.

Listen to our interview with sailor_dave of Orlando Florida. He started caching with the Garmin GPS 12 from his boat and still uses that same unit today. He used GSAK to load both the GPS and the Palm (which runs Cachemate). A couple favorite location he caches are Ocala National Forest, the Space Coast, and Tampa Bay. His caching dreams take him to Europe, Australia, the Far East, and Hawaii. His favorite hide is his "Jambalaya" cache (GC107BV) for it mix of cache types. One of his memorable experiences came while working at Disney World and spotting a fellow Geocacher waiting to have his photo taken with a travel bug and a character. A favorite event was the recent "Third Annual Florida Finder's Fest" event (GC14D8Z) which gave him the oppotunity to hone his caching skills with a group of Cachers. His movie picks include "Animal House," "Better Off Dead," "Caddy Shack," "Stripes," and just about anything by Steven Spielberg. On television he likes "24," "Dexter," "Grey's Anatomy," "M*A*S*H," "Nip/Tuck," and "Seinfeld." As for music, he enjoys the music of a friend's band called "Rico Monaco & Sol Sons," and some of the older groups including "Crosby, Stills, & Nash," "Genesis," "Emerson, Lake & Palmer."

Listen to our interview with Capt Biggins of Tampa Bay, Florida. He learned about Geocaching from a TechTV interview with Jeremy Irish (October 30, 2000 according Geocaching.com's Press Archives). While the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx is his current GPS, he started caching with the Garmin GPS 72. Cachemate on his PocketPC takes care of his paperless caching needs. His most memorable early geocache was "The Scavenger Hunt Cache" (GC480C) -- a locationless cache which gave him the chance to take a photo of a motorcycle officer with a GPSR and a Barbi doll. The most memorable cache was "Mission 9: Tunnel of Light" (GC1169), found during his trip to the Seattle area where he also visited the Groundspeak headquarters. Some day he hopes to cache in Glasgow, Scotland and Hawaii. His favorite hide is currently "Using Your Mind's Eye" (GC1G8YA) which is a visual puzzle that draws fun comments from the Finders. As for music, he enjoys Jimmy Buffett. As for the movies, he like Disney's "Pirates of the Carribean" series, but recently discovered a 1952 film titled "The Crimson Pirate."

Since then they've added more of the same units for the whole family and the Garmin iQue M5 for Dad. He's a GSAK fan using that to load the GPSRs. Were cost and time not an object, he'd love to cache the Banff National Park and Calgary, Alberta areas. Their joint name was inspired by a trip to a Rockefeller Center drug store and the Dr. Scholl's Outrageous Soles display. Scott's first find was "The Empire Strikes Back (GC4D7F)" virtual cache while visiting New York with Emily. Emily started her caching with a Magellan eXplorist 200, upgraded to the Magellan eXplorist 500, but now uses the Garmin Colorado 300. Scott has been using the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx since his start. Emily's most memorable caching trip was in Waco, Texas where the cache density gave her many finds (Scott recalls about 28 caches in only 2 hours of caching). Scott enjoyed caching in his birth state of Hawaii during their honeymoon. Emily wants to cache all 50 states, Scott wants to cache in Bosnia. Emily enjoyed hiding the "Welcome to the Cove (GC168RY)." Their first (and currently only) event hosted was the recent "WWFM IV - Altoona's Blaze Orange Salute (GC1GWG3)" which was a great experience (see the video on YouTube). They started their caching explorations with aÂHandspring Visor PDA with a GPS card from Magellan. Their first DNF didn't deter them, and eventually they purchased theirÂGarmin GPSMap 60CSx and still prefer using that to their newÂGarmin Oregon. They're also using the navigation system in their Toyota Prius and the iPhone 3G. They still use their Handspring Visor and CacheMate for their cache information in the field. The 60CSx receives its caches through MacCaching while the Oregon is drag-and-drop of the GPX files from Geocaching.com.ÂThey hosted theÂ"Caching on your Mac" at GeoWoodstock VI. They made a trip to visit his parents though during GeoWoodstock V. They enjoy their local Northern California for its variety, and especially Lake Powell (where they had an encounter with a winged geomuggle). One of their favorite events is theÂ"Sonoma County Cachers Re-Union Cache" which they host each year. They also created the SRLUP series of caches bringing Cachers to the many small parks of Santa Rosa, California. They enjoy watching movies on their Plasma TV (when not Geocaching), includingÂ"Blade Runner" and the Disney/Pixar movies. For music they enjoyÂ"Depeche Mode,"Â"Heart,"Â"Kansas," andÂ"U2."

We ran into CaptainMath during the "Geocoinfest 2008 - Pittsburgh (GC17H2A)" and spoke with him about Geocaching in Education during Episode 79 of the "Geocaching Podcast." His first GPSR (Garmin GPSMap 60CS) was purchased mostly to assist in navigation, but he's now upgraded to the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx for Geocaching. He's looking toward the next upgrade and possibly one of the Garmin Oregons. He's a Macintosh User but runs Windows and GSAK for his Geocaching. Since his PDA died though, he's using his Apple iPod Touch and MacCaching to keep track of cache information. Some of his favorite Geocaching took place during his attempt to complete "The Pennsylvania All Counties Challenge (GC10YN8)." One of his favorite cache finds is the "Rocky River Cache (GC1903)" for its rich history and cool view. For a brief period this past summer, he was rivalling the find rate of CCCooperAgency and nearly burned himself out on Geocaching. As for event, the "Tri-State Treasures" events are a favorite, in part due to its location near the "Tri State 1942" benchmark which marks the meeting of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. He's a fan on the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins. "A Beautiful Mind" was probably his favorite movie of all time, but on television he enjoys watching "The Office," "American Gladiators," "Star Trek," and "Night Court."

While we work out the details of the general sale (a.k.a. figure out a way to handle payments other than PayPal) we've re-opened the pre-orders for the Cache-A-Maniacs Geocoins. Pre-orders will be accepted through November first. Pre-orders will save the order fee and pay only the actual estimated postage (during the general sales period buyers will pay an order fee and additional shipping fees to cover the materials and extra payment processing fees). So get your order in soon for one of the Cache-A-Maniacs or Cache-A-Manaics Limited Edition Geocoins.

The pre-order process is fairly simple; E-mail us your mailing address and how many of each coin you'd like and we'll reply with an invoice to print and mail to the PO Box. Each of the regular coins is $10 USD, and the limited edition copper coins are $15 USD. Once your request has been received we'll calculate the actual estimated postage and e-mail you the final total. Drop a check or money order in the mail to our PO Box. During her interview she talked about how she didn't really get into Geocaching until she got her own GPSR. She's recently received a Garmin Colorado as a Valentine's Day gift and enjoys cache both with or without her family. Just like Firefly03 though, Flutey is really into Geocoins. She's nearly out of her first geocoin and looking forward to making a second soon. Perhaps the best benefit of Geocaching though has been that she's learned that she can do more than she thought she could.

We spoke with him on the eighth anniversary of the original stash which was about two years after his sixth cacheversary. His first GPSr was an Eagle Explorer. KYWildTurkey uses EasyGPS, Spinner, and Plucker to load up his caches. His most favorite hides were his "Pushing Up Daisies" series of caches, starting with GCECBD. Background for Garmin Colorado Users

We just purchased the Garmin Colorado 400t and spent a day working with it to learn about the unit and hopefully replace Firefly03's ailing Vista CX. In my experiments with the new GPSR I've created a background for the Cache-A-Maniacs (see the image at the right). To transfer this into your Colorado, simply connect the unit to the computer through the USB cable, once it mounts save the image to:
(Garmin)\Garmin\Profiles\
It will then appear as on option under:
Setup: Display: Background: cam.jpg
We'll be returning our Colorado though and replacing the Vista with either a 60Cx or 76Cx depending on the deals we find. While there is much to like on the new unit, the basic Geocaching functionality is missing in favor of the new paperless Geocaching feature which interferes with normal Geocaching. While I'd highly recommend the Colorado to someone looking for a good GPSR for outdoor sports, I'm afraid I can't recommend strongly enough that Geocaching not purchase this unit until basic Geocaching functionality has been restored. I'll be talking about that during the next Cachers of the Round Table and likely Podcacher.

I am MadPup. I wanted to tell you that I love listening to your Cache-A-Maniacs podcast. Mom and dad had a CD from the MWGB that we listened to in the car. I love it. Hope to see you [Firefly03] and DarrylW4 at an event soon.

We'd run into MadPup at several events before the Midwest Geobash, but it wasn't until the Geobash that we became the "famous cachers." We ran into her and her parents again at the NERPA event. Such an excited young girl and she's now signing on and logging her own caches independently of her parents.

We've had many requests for the second round of Log Books. We're still adding names to the list, but we're not certain we'll have enough log books for folks adding their names to the list now. We're waiting on word back from one of the major event as to quantities and that will determine the number available for the new entries. We've created a few Flyers for cachers who want to help promote the show. These PDFs can be printed at home and cut into quarters to be dropped into caches or at events. These different versions have been created with the same text but with three options for colors and for either US Letter or A4 Letter paper.
