It's a show full of feedback and Geocaching discussion for the one-hundred seventy-seventh edition of the GeoGearHeads. Michael Miller of the "Cache and Release" podcast attempted to join The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 this week, but due to some issues with the Google+ Hangout On Air wasn't able to participate much. The feedback started with some from Limax about Waterfield Designs bags and the new Geocaching.com messaging service. The panel took a short detour into the Geocaching.com six souvenirs for the summer. Nighthawk700 tipped us off to the name change of the official Geocaching.com app to "Geocaching Backcountry." Then both Jennifer of TeamAJK and Astronut shared information about a new centimeter accurate positioning system in development. The show kicked of with extensive discussion about the Challenge Cache Submissions Moratorium. Geocaching.com is looking for input through May 12th from the Geocaching community which will inform a survey coming out later, which will in turn influence the future of Challenge Caches on Geocaching.com. Nighthawk700 tipped us off about a change in the Geocaching.com Live API as posted to the CacheSense and GSAK forums. As of May 18th access tokens expire every six days rather than lasting till revoked (authorizations are managed through the "Authorizations" tab from the "Account Settings"). Then lafitefl shared more about Kayak caching, along with TheWoodenRadio and his planning for "Geo-Boat #1" (GC54CB4). Ulf also mentioned "24" (GC1AGHB) – a real time puzzle website paired with mass transit to create an unknown cache with more than a thousand favorite points. The Engadget article about lithium-ion batteries under a microscope was next. Finally the changes to the Munzee Code of Conduct were submitted by brilang.

For the one-hundred sixty-fourth edition of the GeoGearHeads Jennifer (author of the "Geocaching Puzzle of the Day") from teamajk answers questions about puzzle caches from the GeoGearHeads audience. The first questions came from tjarrard and Astronaut about what makes a puzzle cache different from other caches. A.Demshar wanted to know opinions about puzzle cache logging etiquette. Limax wanted to know how to determine the puzzle type when looking at the cache for the first time. Anteaus recommended "How to Puzzle Cache" book and wondered if there might be an extra book with more tips and tricks. Jennifer added a "Puzzle Solving Toolbox" post with resources she collected for solving puzzles. A.Demshar then asked for help through the Live Q&A with a play fair cipher while scrapcat wanted to know about a one-time pad. Thavia wanted tips for creating a puzzle cache, to which Jennifer provided a link to information from her recent talk. CraigsOutside called in about using a keyword as a passphrase in his cache. Then LeofricH asked about the process of submitting a puzzle cache to the Geocaching.com Reviewers. billy robson asked about an easy way to find the cache description in the HTML from the cache page. Team_Pugatch asked about the average difficulty rating for puzzle caches. TAZ427 wanted tips for solving puzzles in a foreign language (he's planning to visit last remaining APE cache – GC4ZGHZ). Jennifer suggested using Cryptocrack as it does work in multiple languages. Brilang wanted a tool to determine the steganography encoding, to which Jennifer suggested "Jeffrey's Exif Viewer." Next graywolf5 asked for image search tools. FauxtoPro wanted an opinion about single- or multi-stage puzzles, as well as container expectations. Lastly dsvmusic wanted tips about the container itself.

We had a discussion of many topics for the one-hundred twenty-fourth edition of the GeoGearHeads. Special guest Walt Grogan joined The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 started with questions and feedback from the GeoGearHeads. The first one was a tip from brilang about the compass in iOS 7. juris1c asked about a method for getting a GPX file of Munzees, followed by Limax asking about a way to reduce overlap of Pocket Queries from Geocaching.com (the answers were to look at the tools in GSAK and Project-GC or using manually created route files). Last on the feedback train was a trip report from Phillyman who had issues with his GPSR and fell back to his smartphone as backup. Then came the articles and new releases, kicked off by an article on the Verge about the updated Moto G and new Moto E. Finally the panel talked a little about the changes to Ingress reported by Android Headlines and there's more information in INGRESS REPORT - EP5M.

Welcome to the GeoGearHeads 2013 Traveler Race! We've partnered with TB-Run.com to power the first GeoGearHeads sponsored race. The goal of these travelers is to meet as many Geocachers as possible along their travels while sharing Geocaching tips and tricks between March 1, 2013 and September 1, 2013. Each traveler earns a point for each unique cacher who submits a log to it. Since this is intended to be fun for everyone (as well as sharing some Geocaching knowledge) you are encouraged to submit multiple travelers, each with its own tip or trick. We hope you're able to participate by either moving a trackable item or releasing one yourself. Perhaps you'll be fortunate enough to do both! Here's how to enter the race;
Acquire and active your Geocaching.com traveler. You can use a travel bug tag, geocoin, or any other Geocaching.com trackable (provided it can be set free and isn't already in another race), new or old.
Fill in the traveler information. You may use any name you like, but please include the following for the mission; This traveler is a member of the "GeoGearHeads 2013" race and would like to meet as many Geocachers it can while encouraging the exchange of tips and tricks.
Include your tip or trick (perhaps something you use frequently or something picked up from the show) and the following HTML in the description (click on the "source" button before pasting in this text); <br><br><b>Please try to keep this traveler moving!</b> Discoveries and events are highly encouraged as this traveler earns points for the number of logs from unique geocachers. If you have a favorite tip or trick please include it when you log this traveler. We love sharing tips with our fellow Geocachers to help improve the game and inspire the players!<br><br><i>Information about the <a href="http://cacheamaniacs.com/geo-gear-heads-2013-traveler-race">GeoGearHeads 2013</a> is available through the <a href="http://www.cacheamaniacs.com">Cache-A-Maniacs</a> website. <a href="http://www.tb-run.com/show-race.php?run=GGH1">Standings</a> are available through the <a href="http://www.tb-run.com/">TB-Run.com</a> service which powers this race.</i>
Add a photo. Though not required, we’d like to see a photo of your traveler. (Instructions)
Login to the TB-Run.com site. (If you've not created a TB-Run.com account, you will need to create one.)
Add the traveler to the race. Make note of the traveler's ID (that "TB" number, not the tracking number) and add it to the "GeoGearHeads 2013" race. You will receive a confirmation page from TB-Run with the traveler's information. If that information is correct click the button to confirm.
Attach a note or tag with the traveler's mission. We've created some optional tags to print and include with your racers. These PDFs are available in two sizes and two versions: Business Card Size: ColorB&W Geocoin Insert Size: ColorB&W
Release your traveler. Being that this traveler wants to meet Geocachers an event might be the place to set it free. Discoveries are highly encouraged! We want these travelers to move so please don't keep the traveler.
This race was started simply to have fun among the GeoGearHeads audience. No prizes are expected but contribution of prizes are welcome. If you would like to contribute prizes please mail them to:
Cache-A-Maniacs PO Box 1144 Troy MI 48099-1144
If you have a prize which requires other arrangements (e.g. electronic delivery) please contact us at GeoGearHeads@CacheAManiacs.com. The prizes donated to the race will be distributed to the leading traveler owners based on the score for top travelers as determined by TB-Run.com. Each traveler owner is eligible for one prize regardless of the number of travelers entered. Our current Prize Pool includes:
On episode fifty-eighth of the GeoGearHeads we talk with John Robb (of Cache At Night who caches under teamvoyagr) about geocaching with UV lights. For more about UV and IR caching check the "Ultra Violet and Infrared Night Caches" on their blog. For those looking to get into night caching, check the BFL Boot Camp hosted by the Toronto Area Geocachers. 4freds and the "Code Travel Beetle" were also mentioned as being the first entry into the GeoGearHead 2013 traveler race. DarrylW4 generally recommends attendees use "Geo Bucket" or "Looking4Cache Free" for iOS (though he prefers "Geocaching with Geosphere") and "CacheSense Demo" or "Neongeo - Demo" (check our show 56). We also received word from Groundspeak related to our topic of show 55. Thanks to Wet_Coaster and his question for kicking off the conversation in this show about the use of NFCs in Geocaching. We also talked about the GeoGearHead 2013 traveler race starting next month. You can add your traveler to that race through TB-Run.com (quick tip; login to TB-Run before clicking through links).

For the fifty-sixth edition of the GeoGearHeads we're joined by AZtech, forum moderator for NeonGeo. The Geocaching app for Android devices is available from the Google Play Store as a full, paid version or in a trial version. AZtech provided several screenshots used during this show's recording and we suggest watching the YouTube for the visual as he talks about the features. He also answered questions from JerseyEric and Nighthawk700 in the 70 minute long show.

Episode fifty-one is a discussion about the future of location tech and gaming. The session opens with a very complimentary voicemail from smile makers (who had been featured on episode 257 of the original Cache-A-Maniacs). We also heard from Ed2Ed about the TB-Run and TB-Rescue sites. The real conversation starts with former guest (Beta.08) Rich Owings's "GPS Predictions for 2013" article from GPSTracklog. Later on we're joined by debaere for a discussion about location-based gaming, mostly Ingress and Wherigo.

For the fiftieth beta show The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 talk about how Geocachers make DropBox (referral links for The Bad Cop & DarrylW4) work for them. Before we got into that topic we had a voicemail about the new "gadgetcaches" YouTube channel by WVTim (featured on Beta.41). We also heard from darkman2371 about the Google_Map_V3 macro for GSAK. NoNameYet202 also wrote to remind us of the Geotribes site and how he uses DropBox to sync his GSAK databases.

Beta episode forty-eight contains a broad range of subjects submitted by our great audience! The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 kicked off the show with feedback from Will IB Ready. They also mentioned the Samsung Ad brought up in Beta.47 and the GeoGearHeads on the new CacheFace network. We also heard from Lafitefl about his luck in being routed near some caches by WVTim, then their efforts to find "The Library" (GC2WCV0), "Gadget Cache" (GC333J2), "Widget" (GC2WX5B) and others after hearing him on Beta.41. WVTim himself then emailed us about Beta.46 and how he's been busy since his show working with fellow Cachers about building their own Gadget caches. *TnT* shared his though on making NFCs as a shortcut for a puzzle cache, making it accessible to just about everyone. We had another story about an accidental find from lookforgeo. JR and Juju emailed about their use of DropBox to keep their GSAK databases up-to-date. Both schnider and debaere wrote in to ask about the "Beta" tag for GeoGearHead episodes. After the drawing, NoNameYet202 asked about stats packages like FindStatGen, BadgeGen, MyGeocachingProfile.com, and cachestat. DarrylW4 added the cross-platform GCStatistic tool. xpunkx called in to ask about possible tools to handle geotagged photos and tied them with logs. Though neither The Bad Cop or DarrylW4 knew of a solution, DarrylW4 mentioned the GeoJournal Mac app as the closest thing to meet xpunkx's desire. Next we heard from Ed2Ed by email about the "Cat Friends - Lucky" (TB4999F) traveler which was showing up in the wrong cache. Lastly we had a voicemail from JerseyEric about cross-listing caches. During this show we also drew the winners of the Happy Caching Days Giveaway. Our thanks again to Magellan for their donation of an eXplorist GC, and to Brand 44 Colorado for their donation of an Geomate.jr with Update Kit, Geomate Large Log Cache, and a Geomate Gnome Cache.

The crew from the Geocaching Podcast join in for the forty-seventh beta show. The Bad Cop, DarrylW4, HeadHardHat, and xpunkx talk about considerations when giving gifts to geocachers (or potential geocachers). This show doesn't talk so much about gift ideas, but things to consider before giving that person their gift. The Geocaching Podcast goes an annual gift guide, scheduled this year for episode 280. They begin with feedback from Nighthawk700 about a posting by Bruce of Cachesense about pricing. The demo version is free to try, while the full version is currently only $5US in the Play Store. An audio comment from jeepin_idaho prompted some discussion about NFC (and likely a full show in the future). This weeks contributors were entered into the holiday giveaways. Thanks to Magellan, listeners all over the world have the chance to win an eXplorist GC. Brand 44 Colorado was also kind enough to provide a Geomate.jr with Update Kit, Geomate Large Log Cache, and a Geomate Gnome Cache for those within North America. Along with those four awesome gifts, the hosts of the GeoGearHeads will be pitching in a few items themselves to be given away through a drawing on Episode Beta.48 (November 29, 2012) (details available here).
The live video session from this Google+ Hangout On Air can be found on YouTube.
We also heard from several Cachers about last week's GSAK & PQs episode. NoNameYet202 called in about his "autoupdater" macro. TheWinterTrio emailed to suggest working with fellow cachers (including the GSAK forums) and using the "PlacedPQ" macro to help select the date for your PQs. searchjaunt suggested GSAK users who want to take their GSAK databases into the field look at "GDAK," "GSAK addon for Locus," or "IGeoKnife." Our last bit of GSAK feedback came from Hakuin who suggested Mac Users might look at "iCaching" as a native alternative to GSAK. This weeks contributors were entered into the holiday giveaways. Thanks to Magellan, listeners all over the world have the chance to win an eXplorist GC. Brand 44 Colorado was also kind enough to provide a Geomate.jr with Update Kit, Geomate Large Log Cache, and a Geomate Gnome Cache for those within North America. vbpad joins hosts The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 forty-fifth beta show to talk about GSAK and Pocket Queries. vbpad had previously been a guest on the Original Cache-A-Maniacs series, episode 221. He will also be teaching at the Advanced Geocaching: GSAK & OpenStreetMap" (GC3Y78A) event. This show was inspired by "Hakuin's question on loading caches into GSAK. debaere also emailed about the possibility of GSAK being made available on other platforms. Based on the item 17 from the GSAK FAQ, and some conversation, the panel decided it wasn't likely. Finally, a voicemail from Anteaus asked about favorite GSAK Macros. Our forty-fourth beta show talks about Earthcaching and the gear to help you. Before we talked with ClickChik we had a stack of feedback to address. yraft kicked off the feedback mentioning the Tread Lightly campaign in response to our Beta.42 show. debaere called in to let us know that the Google speech recognizer runs on the phone as of Android 4.1, a correction to DarrylW4's comments in Beta.43. Lafitefl and Nighthawk700 shared their stories relating to that show as well. Finally we fielded questions from TeamOrville and *TnT* on CacheSense for Android. Moving into Earthcaching we started with some questions by Lafitefl which we answered using "3.2. Logging of Non-Physical Geocaches" and "5.4. Creating an EarthCache: Additional Tips" of Groundspeak's Help Center, and "GSA EarthCache Guidelines." We also heard from kristaandgeoff and Nighthawk700about what's in their Earthcache Kit. All seven of our contributors have been entered into the holiday giveaways. Thanks to Magellan, listeners all over the world have the chance to win an eXplorist GC. Brand 44 Colorado was also kind enough to provide a Geomate.jr with Update Kit, Geomate Large Log Cache, and a Geomate Gnome Cache for those within North America. The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 gab without any guest for the forty-third beta show, the sixth Randomized edition. They started with a topic submitted by Brightblades about finding containers in good hiding spots. During a conversation about Siri's odd pronunciation of "Geocaching" they talked about The Travel Bugs and their song "To Whom It May Concern." They talked about using QR Codes to simplify logging of trackables and caches. Of course the new iPad mini was discussed as a geocaching tool. As were reports by Android Central on 32GB 3G Nexus 7 pricing, the Verge on the manual for the unannounced Nexus 10, and SKUs for the unannounced Nexus 4. They also talked about the release of the Microsoft Surface and its possibility of being used for geocaching. This week only one contributor was entered into the holiday giveaways. Thanks to Magellan, listeners all over the world have the chance to win an eXplorist GC. Brand 44 Colorado was also kind enough to provide a Geomate.jr with Update Kit, Geomate Large Log Cache, and a Geomate Gnome Cache for those within North America. Hosts The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 are back talking about a variety of topics. We started out with feedback on GSAK.
We mentioned some detailed instructions from listener TheWinterTrio on using the field notes from Geosphere in GSAK; "Instead of 'Uploading' directly to Geocaching.com (how I did it before GSAK v8), I select 'Export.' On the next screen, choose the 'Geocachingz.com/Garmin' format, and then I choose 'Email' on the next screen. I'm guessing you could also do the 'Save to Shared Files,' but I usually do this as soon as I'm done logging for the day to make sure I get them off the phone ASAP to protect me from a phone crash. I also mark a new waypoint at the cache site in my 60Csx, so if I need it, I have a backup that way as well. Once on my laptop, I open the FieldNotes.zip file and save the text file to a separate directory. I also download all the Pics for the day and put them there as well. In GSAK, select the 'Publish Logs' from the 'Geocaching.com Access' menu. On the Publish Logs screen, right-click and choose 'Fetch > From File.' Select the FieldNotes file. It will load all the caches into the window and then you can tweak the found text, add pictures, TB Drop/Visit/Retrieve logs, whatever. You can also setup templates (similiar Geosphere) to add stuff automatically. I only have a simple one that says 'Thanks for the Smiley.' If you don't have an automatic template set, it will automatically put in the text from your field notes. Since I record all the Puzzle/Earth/Virtual notes in there, I didn't want them to get accidently published. I don't put anything like found counts for the day or anything else, so the template is only to protect me from publishing spoiler information. The most we've done in a day is about 25 caches, so maybe when we hit more I'll play more with the templates. Once you've tweaked all the text and things, you just hit publish and away it goes. It is much quicker than anything else I've tried. I never like'd doing the real log in the field via the "official app". I will only use that if I need to log a dropped TB or a quick FTF message. Everything else waits until I get home. If I only have a couple caches to log, I usually do the upload directly to Geocaching.com instead, but I'm going more and more to GSAK even for those. I recently went down to Oregon for a week for a Star Party and up to Canada for a week to visit family. We cached on the way there and the way back. I got about 60 caches on the first trip and 30 on the second. Each day I sent a file to email and processed it at night. When I got back home again, I had all the logs in GSAK ready to publish and just hit go. I don't do any logging except TB drops while on vacation. (we're just paranoid about logging out of state caches while not home.)" "One thing I forgot... With Geosphere, since you are 'Exporting' and not 'Uploading' you need to clear the upload flag yourself after you export the field notes. It doesn't do it automatically. GSAK can freak if you try and import a field note a second time..."
Hosts The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 talk about using smartphone and tablets for Geocaching without mobile data service on the thirty-sixth beta show. Above all else, we talked about the importance of the Pocket Queries which are only available on Geocaching.com to Premium Members. The Official Geocaching App (from Groundspeak) is available for Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone. Other specific apps we mentioned for iOS users were Geosphere, Looking4Cache, and GeoBucket. On Android, cachers will want to check out c:geo, CacheSense, and NeonGeo.

For the twenty-second beta episode we performed our first test of the Google+ Hangouts On Air with special guest ACFever. He works for the Bloomington Illinois Police and is a member of the Central Illinois Geocaching Association and joined us to talk about safety considerations when using social media. Some of the links mentioned in the show or are useful references are:
We're talking with sparrows_gold (of Maribell Associates, Inc.) about First Aid Apps on the twenty-first beta show. Here are some of the apps for both Android and iOS we found:
Our twentieth beta show returns to Groundspeak for the last interview recorded at the Lily Pad. This time we're talking with Eric who most geocachers will recognize from the Latitude 47 blog. He's also responsible for their social media (Facebook, Flickr, Google+, Twitter, and YouTube) presence.
Our nineteenth beta show looks at vehicle navigation GPSRs and apps. We started with some feedback from OBXGeek about events beyond the GC101. We also heard from Nighthawk700 and Yawppy on the Vehicle Navigation GPSRs and Apps. We mentioned the Griffin DriveSafe app for iOS in the show as a good, free resource for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users as to local laws on mobile use.
We try something new for our eigteenth beta episode -- a random assortment of topics submitted by Listeners. Nativtxn shared more on the Columbus app from last week, and on CacheSense and their YouTube tutorials. automattack shared some of the features of Neongeo he likes. jeepin_idaho wrote in with a little information about outdoor clothes for professional outdoor guides. K9 Crew asked for some discussion on cache placement. Bear_Left replied to some of the Google+ comments about tech clothing and cache hints. Team Monkeyboy wrote in about the new Geocaching.com site updates and the changes to the guidelines. Our final contribution came from Lafitefl asking about how much hint is too much hint, and issues with loading TOPO maps onto his Oregon 450.
Our fourteenth beta show talks about OpenStreetMaps. We suggested listeners interested in becoming involved in the community check out their Beginners' guide and video tutorials. For those looking to install OSM on their GPSRs, they have a couple pages for Garmin and Magellan users. Listeners looking for more on OpenStreetMaps might also want to download episode 245 of the Geocaching Podcast.
For the thirteenth installment of the GeoGearHeads we talk about some basics of caching with a smartphone. We listed some of the apps available for geocachers, including:
We also drew the names of the lucky commenters to receive the either a pair of donated Android Mittens or USB battery packs. Each of those selected (nativtxn, jeepin_idaho, Nighthawk700, and Dudleygrunt) have been contacted and will receive their gifts shortly. Thanks for the donation of those gifts and the feedback we shared with other GeoGearHead Listeners! We're continuing to reward those who submit their feedback through the end of April with a new prize. We'll be selecting one comment used in each of those shows to receive either a Travel Bug Dog Tag or a Cache-A-Maniacs Geocoin.
We also received feedback from Rothallo about his issues with Evernote. He's also tried Nocs and Trunk Notes which sync through Dropbox (a GeoGearHeads favorite service), and NoteMaster (there is also a free NoteMaster Lite) which syncs with Google Docs (another GeoGearHeads favorite service). He, and the others who sent us comments this time, will have their names dropping into the drawing for a couple pairs of Android Mittens or a couple of USB battery packs.
Beta episode nine hits the feed with a conversation about Evernote in Geocaching. We're joined by fellow Podcaster XpunkX of the Geocaching Podcast and . He also created a GSAK Macro titled "Export Mystery Caches to Evernote." We graciously received the donation of a couple pairs of Android Mittens which will be given along with a couple of USB battery packs to some of listeners who submit their comments over the next several shows.

Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener Seyah Later: "When you find a new cacher on Geocaching.com be sure to write a quick note and encourage them along. Most cachers will not get to experience an event or the opportunity to meet other cachers right away. A quick note will stand out and do wonders in keeping them interested until the 'addiction' takes hold. Encourage them along just as you would if you were meeting them in person. So whether a new cacher finds one of your caches or you see them on the log of another cache, take the time to send a quick 'welcome aboard.'"

Over the years we've had a few requests for the words to the original Cache-A-Maniacs and Rapid Response theme songs (written and recorded by the talented Geoff Smith). I've listened to the theme many times myself but finally wrote out the lyrics for those who have asked:
Cache-A-Maniacs Theme
We got cache, we got cache. We can load it in a flash. We crazy, loony, screwy, won't you join us in our task?
I got questions. I want quotes. I want several anecdotes. We can take it to another level. We will end up with an ear full.
Cache, Geocache Ain't technology a smash? Don't be scared it's only us. We won't feed you balderdash.
Just a joke we're being funny. We're not talking about money. We can cache-a-mania. You can say we are insania. Cache, we're the Cache-A-Maniacs!
Rapid Response Theme
You better be fast be on your toes, be swift, you must be quick. To answer the question right before you is a precarious trick. A rapid response is what you need, Get ready here we go. Just do your very best and you'll be sure to steal the show.
You'd better be quick. You'd better be quick. You'd better be rapidly quick.
You'd better be quick. You'd better be quick. You'd better be rapidly quick.
Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener WRWhizard: "When you find a well worn 'GeoTrail' leading to the cache, it might be a good idea to drag some dead fall over to block it so it will grow back natural and help restore the difficulty of the original hide. In general, you should cover your tracks and leave no trace you were there. Conversely, I use the tracking skills I've begun to acquire, to follow the hider to his newly placed cache. I check logs to see how recently a cache has been found, and adjust for how old the traces should be when carefully approaching the cache area so as not to trample any clues."

Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener rosebud55112: "If you live in a part of the world that has a significant change of climate with the changing seasons, you may want to check what time of year a cache you are searching for was hidden. Hiders tend to use camouflage appropriate to the season they hide the cache, so a cache hidden in the spring may be easier to find in the fall, when its camo is gone or out-of-place."

You may be pleasantly surprised to find you have not and the cache is waiting for you just around the corner. Place the log into the nano with the string sticking out and tuck the string under the cap. This will provide a 'handle' for future cachers to easily remove the log. I frequently use waxed dental floss for this."

They started caching with the Garmin Rino 120 but upgraded to the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx for the improved reception. To load both units he uses MacCaching. His favorite location to date was Hawaii and dreams of hitting Australia. His favorite hide was Ruby Ferry (GCYM9B). One of his more memorable hunts was for Camels Prairie Stash (GC25) during an event. For other entertainment he likes the Lord of the Rings movies, 24 on television, and listening to Michael Bublé.
Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener wademercer: "When you come across a cache that is damaged or in need of repair, add a maintenance log to alert the owner. I have found that most owners will send an email back, and usually will give a time frame as to when they can make the repair. If they have moved or are far away (and you are close to the cache) you might offer to replace the cache container for them. This will get the cache up and running again for other cachers, and also earn you brownie points!" Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener pumpkinking27: "If you are getting ready to hide some caches, don't forget that some places will be experiencing a big season change. Your typical camo might not be good for the fall and winter. Hiding a cache now in a place that will look different in a few weeks, or months will require some additional thinking when it comes to the camo. Earlier this year they attempting finding a cache with the iPhone and found they were actually able to locate those caches in the woods. Shortly after they bought the Geocaching iPhone App and love the convenience of caching without all the prep. They still use that old eTrex for the kids though, loaded through MacCaching. Their favorite cache so far was found in Naples, Florida. At a loss for ideas of dream locations, Darryl and Drie suggested New Zealand and Australia, and the upcoming Oz Mega Wagga Wagga Mega-Event. Dave and his friend John host the "Mac Geek Gab Podcast." The family enjoys attending concerts and this year the kids enjoyed their first Phish concert. A movie they recently enjoyed was "Instinct." Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener dougswass: "I am from north of Toronto Canada, and have a tip for 'northern' n00bs. I started in early April, and was able to find a number of caches that would have been much harder in summer time, caches in trees and bushes are a lot easier before all of the trees are in bloom, and the wild grass grows up around them. I was able to find them at a much faster rate because of the easier terrain rating of spring time. In Canada (and probably the northern states too) you can probably reduce the terrain rating by .5 or 1 in spring and fall. Finding a number of caches that seasoned geocachers had DNF'd fueled my now unsatisfiable obsession. I attribute some of the finds to the lowered terrain rating. (Another bonus is mosquitoes etc are not a nuisance in the spring, making it more enjoyable). So my tip to folks thinking of starting geocaching, starting in the spring or fall in the northern half of the continent makes the introduction more rewarding."

Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener chico_valdez: "Often when we are out in the woods searching for a cache, we seem to get pitch or sap on our hands after we've touched a tree trunk or branch. Inevitably the sap gets on everything including our GPSR, clothes, or PDA and its really annoying. Trying to wash it off your hands with water just doesn't work. I have had to do this when the grounds crew cut back the growth that hid you from the muggles on a near by trail. When faced with moving your cache leave a forwarding address when possible. Just write the coordinates to the new location on a slip of paper and put it into a zip lock bag. Place the bag where the cache was originally hidden, such as under the usual pile of sticks. Then if a cacher with the old coordinates comes to find the cache they will not be hit with a DNF. They can follow the forwarding address to the new location. They will thank you just like they did me! Remember to retrieve the bag after you think that there will be no more cachers with the old coords seeking the cache. That way it will not just become geotrash!"

Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener L&N Railroad: "Don't note cache problems in 'Found It' or 'Didn't Find It' logs. When a cache has a problem contact the owner directly, or use the 'Needs Maintenance' or 'Needs Archived' options to log the issue instead of noting the issue in a 'Found It' or 'Didn't Find It' log. Some cache hiders don't read found or DNF logs, and some cache owners are no longer active. It's not unusual to visit a cache with long string of Found It logs containing the message 'soggy log,' for example. If the cache needs work then post an additional Needs Maintenance log for this. If a cache has a serious problem then check to see if the owner is no longer active. If the owner's profile says that it has been years since they've visited Geocaching they're not active and the cache warrants a 'Needs Archived' log instead of 'Needs Maintenance.' In some cases active cachers don't maintain their hides so a string of ignored problems may warrant a 'Needs Archived' log after close examination. Finally, if a cache has serious ignored problems (especially safety issues) you should contact Geocaching directly."
Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener sparrows_gold: "When going on a 'FTF' hunt, if you're the lucky one to find the blank log - don't rush to log it in right away! By waiting a few hours or the next day, this keeps more people going for the hunt and the cache owner will get more hits to his cache! There is nothing worse than publishing a new cache and only one person finds it for the next week!"

But, water alone, and too much, can be just as bad. Most sports drinks provide electrolytes, but are mostly sugar, or other carbohydrate content. Energy drinks are sports drinks, with some form of stimulant, usually caffeine, which may provide quick energy, but for only short period. Caffeine is also a diuretic, which will cause the body to expel water, and too much, can cause dehydration. A good tip, would be a 50/50 mixture of a sports drink, with plain water. This way, the body gets the electrolytes, while the water is still absorbed, and not as bound to the carbohydrates (Sugars)."

Were cost and time not an object, he'd love to cache the Banff National Park and Calgary, Alberta areas. As for their hides, his favorites are "We Wood Eaven Put A Cache Here (GC11FQ6)" and "GEOSCAMS (GC17917)." His best event memory comes from last year's "MOGA 2008 (GC167P0)" Mega Event with kid number 1. Bumanfam Mom is a fan of the "Harry Potter" movies. As for Dad, he likes "ER," "Survivor," and the "Star Wars" series.

Listen to our interview with the.james.gang of Western Washington State. We spoke with mom of the five person family team who got their start in Geocaching through her parents and a multi-cache. Their caching started with just a Magellan Explorist 500 but added a Garmin eTrex Legend and use both with EasyGPS. Despite the GPSRs though, it doesn't prevent their getting lost following an FTF attempt (and now she remembers to mark her car). She's still looking forward to find the Mission 9: Tunnel of Light Project APE Cache and the ORIGINAL STASH TRIBUTE PLAQUE. They've enjoyed doing the Kitsap County Challenge and visiting Groundspeak. But don't miss the stories about their encounters with muggles and other Geocachers! Also mentioned in this episode was the GCinOHIOGeoFest at the Miami County Fair Grounds in Ohio.

She's recently received a Garmin Colorado as a Valentine's Day gift and enjoys cache both with or without her family. Just like Firefly03 though, Flutey is really into Geocoins. She's nearly out of her first geocoin and looking forward to making a second soon. Perhaps the best benefit of Geocaching though has been that she's learned that she can do more than she thought she could. We also thanked Bluedepth for his help with the show notes. Our congratulation on his first year cacheaversary went to ReefPilot having hit caches in 24 states, 2 Canadian provinces, and 4 countries.
